About Cub Scouts

Cub Scouting is Fun with a Purpose

All parents want their children to grow up to be self-reliant, dependable, and caring individuals.  Cub Scouts has these same goals in mind for your child.  Since the organization began in 1910, scouting has been weaving lifelong values into fun and educational activities designed to develop character, good citizenship, and physical fitness in youth.

How Cub Scouting Works

There are five programs across grades K-5: Lion (Kindergarten), Tiger (1st grade), Wolf (2nd grade), Bear (3rd grade) and Webelos (4th/5th grade).  Each program has a Handbook with age-appropriate activities and other requirements to be completed to earn badges, pins, or belt loops.  No previous experience in scouting is required and you can join at any time!

The youth attend weekly Den Meetings (with youth in their grade), at the school, usually on Tuesday evenings.  The youth play games, do crafts, and have fun.  Most of the program requirements are covered in the Den Meetings; some requirements must be completed at home.  Den field trips may also be scheduled at other times.  Den Meetings are led by a Den Leader or another parent.  Parents are responsible for providing transportation to/from meetings and field trips.

Once a month, a Pack Meeting (K-5 all together) is held at the school, usually on Tuesday evenings.  Pack Meetings are for recognizing achievements and having fun as a full community.  Crafts, games, skits, and sing-a-longs are built around a different theme each month.  Pack Meetings promote fellowship among different aged youth.  Sometimes the Pack will hold outdoor events or meet in area locations.  Families are welcome at all Pack events.

Parent Involvement

Cub Scouts is run by Parent Volunteers!   Our programs are great because of the people who run them.  Small groups meet periodically to plan Den Meetings, Pack Meetings, and Special Events.  Every parent is expected to sign up to offer assistance in some way.

Registration Fee

New Scout one-time registration Fee: $25

Annual youth dues for 2023 Program Year: $80

Adult volunteer: $60 (covered by Pack Funds)

The national registration fee is $105.  This includes a one-time joining fee of $25 and an annual fee of $80.   For only $15, your scout may add a year-long subscription to the award-winning Scout Life magazine (which we highly recommend!).

These fees include national and local registration, a program Handbook, all badges and awards, craft supplies, and ticket admissions for most outings.

Cub Scout Behavior

Good behavior is expected at all scout meetings.  We use a “three strike” model to address inappropriate youth behavior at meetings.  One strike is a warning.  Parents will be contacted if a youth receives two or three strikes.

All family members are welcome at Pack events, but children must be supervised.

Uniforms

A uniform is required to display awards and achievements.  Lions wear a t-shirt, whereas the Tiger, Wolf and Bear scouts all wear the same blue uniform shirt (buy them big), changing neck scarves each year.  Webelos wear khaki uniform shirts which they continue to use in Scouts BSA.  Scout hats, slacks, belts, and other accessories are optional.  These are purchased at the Prairielands Council Robeson Scout Shop in north Champaign, off Olympian Dr.

Popcorn Sales

Funds raised from Popcorn Sales (October/November) are our ONLY source of income.

The money raised from selling popcorn helps offset the costs for materials and activities like Handbooks, Pinewood Derby, Blue and Gold Banquet, guest speakers, food, and financial assistance as needed.  The Pack gets a third of all sales made, so everyone needs to sell!
